Frequently Asked Questions

I have a great idea, what should my first step be?

If you are new to the food industry and have never brought a product to market, you should read the E-book The Food Business Tool Kit For Entrepreneurs ($19.99) This book will explain the basics. You can also add on an hour of consulting for an additional $130 to discuss the specific details of your product.  You should also do some market research and figure out why your product is not on the market or what makes it unique. Consider making some basic recipes in your kitchen but don’t get too deep, its important to make the product correctly from the beginning so you don’t waste time, this includes using industrial ingredients and making sure someone can manufacture the product for you.

Once you are ready to begin, you can fill out the contact form and you will be contacted to discuss your project in more detail.

How much does it cost to manufacture a food product?

There are many costs involved in bringing a product to market including the R&D costs (IE hiring a consultant) but also ingredient costs, production runs, getting the product on the shelf, storing it in a warehouse and putting it in the truck. The costs will depend on what type of product you are making, the co-packers minimum production run, type of microbial testing that is required, and more.

What is the shelf life of my product?

The most common question from a brand owner or entrepreneur is “What is my shelf life and how can I extend it”. The answer involves understanding your current shelf life and what factors contribute to its demise. Does it get moldy? Let’s find a preservative, does it go rancid, let’s use a different fat, or make sure we get a good oil supplier. There are many solutions depending on the shelf life concern.

Do you work with clients who are out of state?

We can work with clients anywhere. As long as there are computers, shared google files and FEDEX or UPS, we can make it all happen no matter where you are.

How much does it cost to hire a food consultant?

Most consultants charge anywhere from $100 to $250/hour and offer up a variety of services. Some consultants do flat rates, others charge by the task, or by the hour. At A La Carte Connections we do an assessment of your project and submit a proposal for your review. We will never take you by surprise or charge for anything that has not been agreed upon beforehand. There is no specific cost as every client situation is unique and has its own time frame and needs.

Will I own the formula that is created?

Before any project begins, a detailed contract will confirm ownership of final formulation. In almost all cases, the client is the owner of the formula that they have hired A La Carte Connections to create. We are not manufacturers and do not have any plans to produce a product, and all formulas are made for the client who has hired us to get it done.
